Military Life at Lackland Air Force Base

Lackland Air Force Base, known as the “gateway” for many careers in the Air Force, is located in southwest San Antonio, about 20 minutes from Downtown San Antonio. JBSA Lackland is named after Brigadier General Frank Lackland, who served in the District of Columbia National Guard and was later commissioned into the Army.

The base consists of 46,577 people: 24,702 active-duty members, 10,131 DoD civilian employees, and 11,744 contract employees and family members. Due to the large number of people living on base and being located in the highly-rated Lackland Independent School District, housing is in high demand, and you will most likely be wait-listed.

JBSA Lackland’s primary purpose is to provide basic training to the Air Force, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve members. Home to the 502nd Installation Support Group, this base is comprised of many different wings in addition to technical, medical, and language training.

37th Training Wing

As the largest training wing in the U.S. Air Force, the 37th Training Wing’s vision is to achieve “The Training Standard of Excellence for the Department of Defense” across its four groups (Air Force, Space Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard). This wing operates nine schools and trains Airmen, military services, government agencies, and more from over 100 countries.

Defense Language Institute English Language Center

Part of the Department of Defense, the primary purpose of the Defense Language Institute English Language Center (DLIELC) is to teach English to international military and civilian personnel.

Inter-American Air Force Academy

The Inter-American Air Force Academy provides technical, professional, and management courses in Spanish for around 1,000 military and governmental students from 18 Latin American countries.

502nd Installation Support Group

The 502nd Installation Support Group, formerly the 802nd Mission Support Group, consolidates and furnishes civil engineering and provides communications and operations support across JBSA.

National Guard 149th Fighter Wing

The 19th Fighter Wing, also known as the Lone Star Gunfighters, is part of the Air National Guard and The Texas Military Department. This wing is an F-16 training unit whose mission is to produce the finest airmen for global engagements and domestic operations.

59th Medical Wing

The 59th Medical Wing provides healthcare services to more than 240,000 San Antonio beneficiaries through various treatment facilities. Their vision is “Exemplary Care, Global Response,” and their mission is “Developing Warrior Medics Through Patient-Centered Care.”
