San Antonio is home to the largest military healthcare organization in the Department of Defense, Brooke Army Medical Center. BAMC includes 8,500 staff members who provide inpatient and outpatient services to around 4,000 patients daily. Staff members are active duty military personnel from uniformed services, federal civilian employees, contractors, and volunteers. In addition to BAMC, there are six outpatient clinics: Westover Medical Home, CPT Jennifer M. Moreno Primary Care Clinic, McWethy Troop Medical Clinic, Taylor Burk Clinic at Camp Bullis, Schertz Medical Home, and Corpus Christi Occupational Health Clinic.
BAMC is the sole Level 1 Trauma Center within the Department of Defense and only one of two within San Antonio. The Trauma Center cares for over 4,000 patients and 80,000 emergency department visits each year.
BAMC offers 450 beds, which can be expanded to 653 in the event of a disaster. Forty beds are reserved for the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center. Additional services include primary and preventative care, surgical care, adult and pediatric primary care, 24-hour emergency department, specialty care, lab tests and radiology, and more.
One of the most prominent parts of BAMC is the 4-story Center for the Intrepid (CFI), a pre-eminent extremity injury rehabilitation center. Built in 2007, the CFI provides rehabilitation and recovery services for the most severely injured combat casualties, including amputations, burns, functional limb loss, and more.
Recently, BAMC received the 2023 Practice Greenhealth Partner for Change Award, which recognizes superior performance in environmental sustainability. BAMC has recycled over 925,000 pounds of waste materials over the past year and reached 1000% use of green cleaning chemicals in multiple areas.
