What is Joint Base San Antonio?

Often we hear that when folks get an assignment to “JBSA,” they aren’t exactly sure where in the city that is, and for good reason. Here we’ve got a quick guide to the several military bases in San Antonio, Texas, so you have a place from which to start your research so you can know what bases are in San Antonio. Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) is one of the largest military bases in the world, located in San Antonio, Texas. The base is comprised of three previously separate bases – Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Fort Sam Houston. If you’re new to JBSA, navigating the various installations can be daunting. In this super quick guide, we’ll take a look at the key installations at JBSA as well as the additional military installations in our very busy military city.


Lackland Air Force Base

Lackland AFB is home to the 37th Training Wing, which provides basic military training for all enlisted Air Force personnel. The base also hosts the Air Force Security Forces Center, the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, and the Defense Language Institute English Language Center. If you’re a new recruit, Lackland AFB will be your first stop for basic training.

You may also hear of the Medina Annex, which is located west of Lackland AFB and serves as a support base for the 24th Air Force.

Randolph Air Force Base

Randolph AFB is a United States Air Force facility located in Universal City, Texas, just outside of San Antonio. It is home to the 12th Flying Training Wing, which provides pilot training for the Air Force, Navy, and Marines. While best known for training pilots, the base also hosts the Air Force Personnel Center and the Air Force Medical Operations Agency.

Randolph Air Force Base has a long and distinguished history, dating back to its establishment in 1931 as a training site for aviation cadets. Over the years, it has played a critical role in supporting military operations around the world, and has been used for a variety of purposes, including as a research and development facility and a testing site for new aircraft.

Fort Sam Houston

Fort Sam Houston is a United States Army post located in San Antonio, Texas. The base is one of several military installations in the San Antonio area, and is home to the US Army Medical Command, the Army Medical Department Center and School, and the Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. The base also houses the Brooke Army Medical Center, which provides medical care to military personnel and their families. Fort Sam Houston has a long and storied history, dating back to its establishment in 1876. Over the years, it has served as a training site for soldiers and officers, a medical center, and a research and development facility.

Kelly Field Annex

Kelly Field Annex is a United States Air Force facility located in San Antonio, Texas, and is often referred to as part being of the “Lackland area” of town. The base is one of several military installations in the San Antonio area, and is currently used primarily for aircraft maintenance and repair operations. The base is named after George E. Kelly, a pioneering aviator who was killed during World War I.

Kelly Field has a long and proud history, dating back to its establishment in 1917 as a training site for military aviators. Over the years, it has played a critical role in supporting military operations around the world, and has been used for a variety of purposes, including as a research and development facility and a testing site for new aircraft.

Today, Kelly Field Annex is an important part of the US Air Force’s logistics and maintenance infrastructure, and is home to several key units and organizations. If you’re a military member or a civilian contractor working at Kelly Field, you’ll find a range of resources and support available to you, including housing, medical care, and recreational facilities. And with its location in San Antonio, you’ll also have access to all the amenities and attractions that this vibrant city has to offer.

Camp Bullis

Camp Bullis is a United States Army training facility located in Bexar County, Texas, just north of San Antonio. The base is one of several military installations in the San Antonio area, and is primarily used for field training exercises and marksmanship training. The camp is named after Brigadier General John L. Bullis, a Medal of Honor recipient who served in the US Army during the Indian Wars.

Camp Bullis has a long and distinguished history, dating back to its establishment in 1906 as a cavalry training site. Over the years, it has been used for a variety of purposes, including as a training site for infantry and artillery units, and as a research and development facility. Today, the camp plays a critical role in preparing US Army personnel for a range of missions and operations around the world.

If you’re a military member or a civilian contractor working at Camp Bullis, you’ll find a range of resources and support available to you, including housing, medical care, and recreational facilities. Camp Bullis isn’t technically a part of JBSA (but that seems to depend on who you ask around here!).

Camp Stanley

 Camp Stanley is a United States Army facility located in Boerne, Texas, about 20 miles northwest of San Antonio. It is used primarily as an ammunition storage and maintenance facility, and is operated by the US Army Joint Munitions Command. The camp is named after David Stanley, a Medal of Honor recipient who served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. The camp is relatively small compared to some of the other military installations in the area, but it is an important part of the military infrastructure and contributes significantly to the local economy. It is also an important part of the local community, and the US Army takes an active role in supporting various community initiatives and events in and around Boerne. This military installation doesn’t fall under JBSA.
